VMS 6.2 – 7.1 Console Issue was created by Bruce Claremont
We see an issue on one of our test systems when installing VMS 6.2, 7.0, and 7.1 from an ISO image that we are unable to reproduce on any of our other test systems. The VMS installation will run normally. During the final reboot after the automatic AUTOGEN phase, error messages similar to those shown below will be displayed. The system will boot, but you will be unable to log in via the console.

The workaround is to <Ctrl^P> the emulator and boot again. There is no need to restart the emulator. On the second VMS boot the problem goes away.

If you encounter this problem, please post your host hardware information and the Windows O/S under which you are running FreeAXP to this thread. Include whether it is a 32 or 64-bit edition of Windows.

Bruce,

given that you've just announced support for V6.2, V7.0 and V7.1, this must really be a 'new' problem.

Have you tried or seen it on a real Alpha ? Based on the obvious and easy workaround, this may even be an 'old' OpenVMS problem, although I could not find anything in the old patches (except in VAXLOAD02_061).

Once SECURITY_SERVER is up and running, could you please provide the following data:

$ ANAL/SYS
SDA&gt; SET PROC SECURITY_SERVER
SDA&gt; EXA/INS 00057B48-40;80

We only see the problem on one box. That's what's so unusual. I'll run your commands the next time the box is available.

Bruce,

if you think this may be reproducable - maybe only on that one box, try to take a Windows copy of the system .vdisk in that state prior to the FIRST full boot after the AUTOGEN after the installation.

If the problem is related to the contents on the disk, you should be able to easily reproduce the problem with a copy of the disk in that state. Make another copy before you try it, so you preserve that state in case the problem really is reproducable.

As an alternative, stop FreeAXP before the final boot, restart it and then boot. This will tell you, if the problem somehow depends on the state of FreeAXP.

You can provide the instruction stream data from any other system running the SAME version of OpenVMS, with which you've seen this failure.

Debugging this may be a problem, because an undocumented SET SERVER/START/DUMP qualifier had been added, but apparently only for V7.3 and above.

Here's test results run on the box with the ADA problem (MSI02) and a box that does not see the ADA problem (MSI01).

SETUP (MSI02)

- Launch FreeAXP 271.

- Build VMS 6.2 from VMS 6.2 installation ISO.

- Save disk image after build and before boot that runs automatic AUTOGEN.

TEST 1 (MSI02)

- Continue from SETUP without restarting FreeAXP 271.

- Boot VMS 6.2 disk and let AUTOGEN/Reboot execute.

- See ADA errors. Cannot log in at console.

- ^P

- Reboot VMS 6.2.

- System boots without errors.

- Log in and run following commands:

< class='quote' style='width:400px;white-space:nowrap;overflow:auto'><code style='white-space:nowrap'>$ ANAL/SYS

One additional thing to note. On both systems a SHOW ERROR reveals the following:

< class='quote' style='width:400px;white-space:nowrap;overflow:auto'><code style='white-space:nowrap'>$ sh err
Device Error Count
