FreeAXP rocks... was created by dtpoirot
I am so spoiled...
I played with PersonalAlpha for a few minutes, found FreeAXP and played and played until my license came through from CONNECT.
Now an AlphaStation 255 has shown up at my door.
I am [b:]shocked[/b:]. I have been installing [i:]just the OS[/i:] for over an hour and it is just now to 50%.
I am beginning to wonder if there is a problem with the hardware...
The same process literally takes minutes on FreeAXP.

I believe a VMS install on a real 255 will take almost an hour. The emulator will be much faster, particularly if you are using a ISO of the installation CD. The modern I/O subsystems make a big difference in speed.
Just to be sure, do a SHOW DEVICE D on your drives once VMS is up to see if they have logged any error. If not, then your hardware is probably OK.

Hey Bruce,
The drive shows up in INIT sometimes and sometimes not.
On the plus side, super-fast, hugemongus, 80-pin SCSI drives are cheap.
Thanks!

I've noticed a couple of references to super-fast (15K?) SCSI drives.
I think that the 255 enclosure may not vent higher-heat devices like that properly. Careful, or you might fry the drive!

Hey Brad,
Mine has a front fan, rear fan and a fan in the power supply.
The drive bay area is quite spacious and sparce.
...all that said, the limiting factor is most likely going to be if it is a narrow, wide or SCA drive and LVD vs. Single Ended...
