The problems mentioned here, particularly <a href=" groups.google.com/group/comp.os.vms/brow...6db/e04894fa1764c9de " target='_blank'>the access violations, remind me a bit of problems I ran into fairly recently with a DS10 of mine.

Replied by etmsreec on topic RE: Full log of installation
Hi Bruce,

As requested.
Note that after the system was shut down I rebooted from the VMS Alpha distribution and tried to mount the disk that I had attempted to install VMS on. The system reported that the home block was not found on the volume.
The installation is from an image file on the PC. Running from a real VMS distribution gives the same crash at the same percent complete.

Best wishes
Steve

There are two choices for installation/upgrade:

Initialize - Removes all software and data files that were
previously on the target disk and installs OpenVMS ALPHA.

Preserve -- Installs or Upgrades OpenVMS ALPHA on the target disk
and retains all other contents of the target disk.

* Note: You cannot use preserve to install OpenVMS ALPHA on a disk on
which any other operating system is installed. This includes
implementations of OpenVMS for other architectures.

Do you want to INITIALIZE or to PRESERVE? [PRESERVE] init

When your new system is first booted you will be required to answer
additional questions in order to configure the OpenVMS Cluster correctly.

Will this system be an instance in an OpenVMS Galaxy? (Yes/No) n

For your system to operate properly, you must set two parameters:
SCSNODE and SCSSYSTEMID.

SCSNODE can be from 1 to 6 letters or numbers. It must contain at
least one letter.

If you plan to use DECnet, SCSNODE must be the DECnet Phase IV
node name, or the DECnet-Plus (Phase V) node synonym.

If you have multiple OpenVMS systems, the SCSNODE on each system
must be unique.

Enter SCSNODE: csdsva

If you plan to use DECnet, SCSSYSTEMID must be set based on the
DECnet Phase IV address.

Do you plan to use DECnet? (Yes/No) [Yes]

DECnet Phase IV addresses are in the format

DECnet_area_number.DECnet_node_number

DECnet_area_number is a number between 1 and 63.
DECnet_node_number is a number between 1 and 1023.

If you plan to use DECnet WITHOUT Phase IV compatible addresses,
enter 0.0.

Enter DECnet (Phase IV) Address: [1.1] 1.987

SCSSYSTEMID will be set to 2011.

This was calculated as follows:

(DECnet_area_number * 1024) + DECnet_node_number

Configuring the Time Differential Factor (TDF)

Default Time Differential Factor for standard time is -0:00.
Default Time Differential Factor for daylight saving time is 1:00.

The Time Differential Factor (TDF) is the difference between your
system time and Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). UTC is similar
in most respects to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

The TDF is expressed as hours and minutes, and should be entered
in the hh:mm format. TDFs for the Americas will be negative
(-3:00, -4:00, etc.); TDFs for Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia
will be positive (1:00, 2:00, etc.).

This time zone supports daylight saving time.
Is this time zone currently on daylight saving time? (Yes/No): no

Enter the Time Differential Factor [-0:00]:

NEW SYSTEM TIME DIFFERENTIAL FACTOR = 0:00

Is this correct? [Y]:

Hey Bruce,

I've just successfully installed OpenVMS Alpha v8.3 on a 36GB disk, but it then started to demonstrate quite strange behaviour:

$ prod install DWMOTIF_ECO02

%PCSI-E-PDBVERFAIL, product database verification check failed

The product database failed an internal self-check. This operation will
be terminated without making any modifications to your system. The first
error encountered is shown below. Use the PRODUCT ANALYZE PDB command to
check for additional errors and to obtain instructions on how to proceed.

%PCSI-E-PDBFILERR, file PCSI$FILE_SYSTEM.PCSI$DATABASE;1 failed with the following error:
-RMS-E-ACC, ACP file access failed
%PCSI-E-S_OPFAIL, operation failed
%PCSIUI-E-ABORT, operation terminated due to an unrecoverable error condition

So it appears the disk became corrupt soon after the installation. You are still using FreeAXP 412 x86 (32-bit)? If so, please try 377 to see if the behavior persists. www.migrationspecialties.com/Downloads/freeaxpsetup_377.exe .

We have had one other client report a corruption issue when doing large FTPs on a 32-bit system. They upgraded to a 64-bit system and the problem went away. Not a great answer, but the best I have at the moment.

Thanks Bruce. The network traffic is a possibility - I've been looking at it today and building a system/configuring DECnet/transferring patch kits and it's usually during the transfer of patches that the disk becomes corrupt.

That said, I've also had the license database become corrupt more than once before the first boot!

It looks like I have a valid crash dump for it from forcing a system crash (CTRL-P, crash at the chevrons) as I've set the last installation up with dump off system disk. It may be of limited use, as it can't get back to the system disk to gather unwind data, but it's here.

Hi Bruce,

I tried the 377 release - same symptoms.

Best wishes
Steve
