I'm betting its a network negotiation issue. If possible, hard set the switch port connected to the physical Alpha to 10Mb or 100Mb, depending upon the NIC installed.

Also, check your RMS settings. I use these:

< class='quote' style='width:400px;white-space:nowrap;overflow:auto'><code style='white-space:nowrap'> $ sh rms
MULTI- | MULTIBUFFER COUNTS | NETWORK
BLOCK | Indexed Relative Sequential | BLOCK
COUNT | Disk Magtape Unit Record | COUNT
Process 32 | 32 32 32 32 32 | 127
System 32 | 32 32 32 32 32 | 127

Prolog Extend Quantity QUERY_LOCK
Process 0 4096 System
System 0 4096 Enabled

Just a pointer from my Tru64 installations on FreeAXP: by default, SRM has the network cards in half duplex 10mbps mode. To get full duplex 100mbps you have to manually set it at the chevron prompt:

&gt;&gt;&gt; set ewa0_mode FastFD

At least under Tru64 I was _not_ able to change that setting (sysman), I had to change it in SRM.

Good luck
